Challenges Faced By MGR - 2

Sri MGR Year 98, 24th September, Thursday

In the earlier post we had given a detailed account on how our beloved Leader MGR faced the challenge of implementing the Nutritious meal scheme and how he succeeded, this episode will give you the exhaustive information about the first election victory, 1973 Dindukal Parliamentary election victory of MGR as the head of ADMK party, the emergence of Two Leaves symbol and the first time the symbol printed in all the newspapers of those days. The episode looks very much like a MGR movie though the script was written and directed by God.

After our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR was ousted from DMK on 10th October 1972, people extended their support and insisted to form a party. After touring the nook and cranny of Tamil Nadu, MGR took the decision to form a party on 17th October 1972 and named it as Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. MGR shared most of his times for politics with less importance to movies.

In the year 1971, when MGR was in DMK, Rajangam who was elected as a member of parliament from Dindukal constituency, two years later he died and the seat fell vacant. MGR announced that his party will contest for the by-election.

The centre was ruled by Indira Gandhi (Congress I), the state was ruled by Karunanidhi (DMK), the most praised politician of that time Kamaraj also known as King Maker (Syndicate Congress) had a substantial vote share, who also politically gained  a weightage by calling the DMK as a corrupt party right from 1971.

Challenges faced by MGR for Dindukal election:

1. MGR’s own production and 3 year old project Emgeeyar Pictures Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban is in the completion stage as the background score work is going on amidst the power cut imposed by MGR’s political enemy.

2. The party ADMK does not have a election symbol.

3. The party is six months old.

4. Very little media coverage for ADMK when compared to other political parties.

5. MGR has to face the political giants, Syndicate Congress headed by Kamaraj, his arch enemy and Leader of DMK, Karunanidhi and Congress I, backed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

6. MGR’s ally Communist Party of India announced his candidate.

7. The Dindukal Parliamentary constituency consists of 6 state assembly constituencies. They are Thirumangalam, Usilampatti, Nilakottai, Cholavanthan, Dindukal and Aathur. Nilakottai, Cholavanthan and Aathur were held by DMK, Thirumangalam and Usilampatti held by Forward Bloc and remaining one Dindukal was held by Syndicate Congress. And the majority of panchayath union posts were DMK.

8. The ruling party DMK propagated that MGR is an alien and he is a non Tamil (Malayali).

In the midst of these turmoil, the election commission announced the date of election.

18.04.1973 Filing of Nomination
25.04.1973 Last date for nomination
26.04.1973 Review of Candidacy
28.04.1973 Last date for withdrawal of nomination
20.05.1973 Election
21.05.1973 Counting

Kamaraj and Syndicate Congress party kick started their election campaign one month before the election. (reference given below, Navamani issue dated 21.4.1973, )

By 21.4.1973 all parties had filed their nomination except ADMK. Apart from the challenges given above MGR has to face another hindrance from his blood brothers (own party men) expressing the dissatisfaction over naming of Mayadevar as the party candidate. The same was resolved on the final day that is 25.4.1973 the last date for nomination. Reference given below.

By May 2nd 1973, MGR took a small break from Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban movie completion and went on to attend the campaign. Returned the next day for the movie project, MGR used his time wisely finished the movie and successfully made arrangements for the release of the movie and at the same time safe guarded the negatives and theatre print.

MGR returned to Dindukal and continued his campaign from 10th May 1973. The very next day Emgeeyar Pictures Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban was released all over Tamil Nadu amidst the ruling party atrocities. The then Mayor of Madurai, Madurai Muthu announced that he will wear a saree if Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban gets released, hinting that the movie negatives have been sabotaged.

But the movie became a great success, many MGR fans sent saree parcels to Madurai Muthu’s address, including my father.

With one week left for the election MGR pooled all his resources went nook and cranny of villages in Dindukal spoke to the large gathering in mid night and canvassed for the new party symbol Two Leaves. MGR’s simplified down to earth oration skill and psychological approach towards his people successfully etched the new party symbol to their sub conscious mind. (the symbol still remains as a synonym to MGR)

DMK party leader and his ministers camped in Dindukal for more then a week and used their tactics by pasting old posters (1971, when MGR was in DMK) as MGR is asking people to vote for the Rising Sun the party symbol of DMK so as to confuse the public.

The final list of candidates are:

Name Of The Candidate Name Of The Party
K.Mayadevar ADMK
Pon. Muthuramalingam DMK
N.S.V.Sidhan Syndicate Congress
Seemaisamy Indira Congress
Anganna Chettiar Independent
Govindasamy Independent
Suryamuthu Independent
Sethuramadevar Independent
Varadadesigan Independent

The Communist party of India withdrew their nomination and allied with MGR for active campaign. The day before election the media predicted that the contest is between DMK and Syndicate Congress, since ADMK will likely to split some DMK votes which might favour Syndicate Congress. And as usual respective party members predicted that they are going to win, by a margin of 1,10,000 votes and DMK even went farther and printed victory posters. Puratchi Thalaivar MGR too predicted that ADMK will win with big difference, he told this election is a holy war, and he also asked his party members and allies to be careful since Karunanidhi having money power might try his henchmen to rig the election by bogus voting and might try to stop people who will vote for ADMK. (all this is given in the above image with high resolution, with MGR’s statement in the lower right corner)

The election was peaceful but DMK tried their best to avoid people in voting by using the goons, attacking ADMK and allied members. One old lady died of natural cause after casting her vote. The media and as well other political parties were taken back when the counting began on 21st May 1973.

From the start ADMK was leading in all the 6 constituencies, the lead was huge, like in MGR movie Nallavan Vazhvan, (when the result was announced without knowing who had won, M.R.Radha and his men start to celebrate) the members of Syndicate Congress in Madurai by 11 am, announced that they are leading by 9,000 votes and started to celebrate by bursting crackers. When the announcement came their celebration stopped below is the newspaper cut.

Below is the historical victory of ADMK as recorded.

K.Mayadevar (ADMK) – 2,60,824 votes

N.S.V.Sidhan (Syndicate Congress) – 1,19,032 votes

Pon. Muthuramalingam (DMK) – 93,496 votes

Seemaisamy (Congress I) – 11,423 votes

Puratchi Thalaivar MGR asked the people to support their 6 month old baby ADMK and to stand against the corrupted rule in Tamil Nadu. They accepted his request and they gave impressive victory to MGR and at the same time rejected the pleas of Karunanidhi who asked to prefer Tamil (his party man) against a non Tamil (MGR).

Aftermath of ADMK first victory will be dealt in separate post.

Sri MGR Year 98, 20th September, Sunday

Our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR followed the footsteps of his mentor Peraringnar Anna who had faith in ‘one caste and one God’. Likewise MGR believed in his mother. He said that his mother is his God.

MGR is not superstitious many occasions in his life established this fact. Below are some of the incidents which are major turning points in MGR’s life, that will show he was not superstitious.

Incident one: Nadodi Mannan the first directorial venture and production for MGR and for Emgeeyar Pictures was launched in Vauhini studios in Raghu kalam. His well-wishers asked him to select an auspicious time for the start of the shooting which Puratchi Thalaivar MGR retorted, my mother will sustain me for my success, I will not care for other thing. The movie turned out to the highest grosser of the year 1958.

Incident Two : For filing of nomination for the Madurai West constituency in 1980 general election, against his well wishers MGR filed in Raghu kalam. As we all know that the 1980 election is a critical part in MGR life. As his rule was dismissed on February 1980 and election was announced to be conducted on June 1980. As he believed in his mother, she guarded him and made him victorious, MGR regained his position as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

MGR followed what he preached in his movies. There are numerous instances from his movies which showed his preachings against superstition. I will give two instances, one the scene in Olivilakku, MGR and Sowcar Janaki conversation, when MGR gives the idol of Murugan to her for worship. And another instance  MGR asking his boss Asokan (he was poverty stricken at that time) to head the open ceremony of his new business, for which is co workers try to say that Asokan is not lucky, MGR answers to them and also to Asokan regarding unluckiness.

Below is the article written by R.Govindaraj as said by his father and one of MGR’s bodyguard K.P.Ramakrishnan, which was published in Malai Murasu, Chennai edition dated 23rd December 2010.

MGR’s Patriotism - 2

Sri MGR Year 98, 15th September, Tuesday

We have already published an article on MGR’s patriotism said by MGR’s bodyguard K.P.Ramakrishnan, written by R.Govindaraj. This is the continuation to that post, the article which was published in Dinamalar, Vellore Edition dated 26.1.2014.

Those days MGR was stamped as member of Dravidian party. The DMK party one great agenda is to split Tamil Nadu from India and to create a separate nation. And all of us know the fact that the agenda was later dropped by the DMK Party chief Peraringnar Anna.

Our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR was first person to respond for the speech given by the then Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in radio, who asked to donate generously for the Indo China war. MGR announced that he will give 75,000 rupees and as an advance he gave 25,000 for the war effort. MGR gave that cheque to the then Chief Minister of the Tamil Nadu state Kamaraj, who acknowledged MGR’s generous donation and heartily praised MGR.

Second generous donation given by MGR for the war fund is for the Indo Pakistan war that happened in 1965. He donated 10,000 rupees to the Chief Minister of Karnataka, who had organized a ceremony for the war fund in Sivaji Nagar, Lal Bahadur Stadium.

MGR’s helping hand not only extended for war fund, but his hands also extended for help even for natural calamities, he generously donated sums of money. One such is the three southern states Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka suffered intense flooding in 1961, MGR gave his three days Madras collection of Sabash Maapillai movie to the three states. The amount collected is Rs.17,500. The amount was split and given, Rs.10,000 to Tamil Nadu, Rs.5,000 to Kerala and Rs.2,500 for Karnataka.

When MGR went for the shooting of Adimai Penn in the year 1968 in Rajasthan state of Jaipur he came to know the drought and donated Rs.50,000 to the Chief Minister of the state.

Sri MGR Year 98, 6th September, Sunday

Many MGR fans and devotees choose their cell/mobile number ending with 4777. Someone having a car will pay to get their car registered as 4777, some even wanted to get that number for their bank account.

The story behind 4777 is that our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR got elected as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the first time on 30th June 1977. He assumed office on 1st July 1977. Below is the first photo of MGR as the Chief Minister, snapped by Nagaraj Rao.

To the left is MGR garlanding his mentor before assuming the office of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 1st July 1977, to the right MGR in the seat of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

So then why 4777 is a divine number for MGR devotees and fans?

Puratchi Thalaivar MGR entered the Assembly proceedings on 4th July 1977 and all the elected legislative members took oath in Tamil Nadu Assembly on that day.

Twenty years back I got a bus ticket ending with 4777 but I did not preserved it. Then whenever I get the ticket I use to check the ending number. Couple of months back when I logged on to our MGR blog I was the xxxx4778th person to view the page. Just one number less than 4777. Recently when I logged on to the page view counter showed xxxx4775, after some seconds I re logged on to and I was on the xxxx4777th page viewer. Below is the screen shot.

Click to enlarge the image. Felt something divine for me on seeing the number. Anyone having such an experience of getting the number 4777 please share with us by sending an email to including the scanned image.

Challenges Faced By MGR

Sri MGR Year 98, 2nd September, Wednesday

This is the new series that I am going to write about MGR, the challenges he had faced during his career as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. If someone is asked him or her  to point out the achievements of our Puratchi Thalaivar as a Chief Minister to the state, the answer most likely is “Nutritious Meal Programme”.

This is the detailed information about the programme, the hurdles MGR faced during the time, the budget involved and also the statistics of the school children in the year 1982.

The nutritious meal programme evolved from MGR’s childhood day poverty, the sufferings he and his brother had faced. Recently MGR’s bodyguard K.P.Ramakrishnan article about the Nutritious programme beginning was sent by his son R.Govindaraj. Below is the article.

Click the above image to enlarge

In 1982 the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MGR announced the Nutritious programme to be implemented from Village to Towns. The date of the inauguration is 1st July 1982. The Government took account of children and the record was given to our MGR. He divided the children into three categories: from age 2 to 4, from age 5 to 9 and age 10 to 14. The highest number of children studying are in the age group of 2 to 4 and 5 to 9. The dropouts is staggering when the students reach age 10. The reason for such huge dropouts is due to economic problem, the children after receiving basic education by 10 years, their parents make them as workers, so that their family economy problem is solved.

To decrease the dropouts and keeping in mind the nutrition needed MGR implemented his dream project. The budget worked out to Rs.100 Crores (in 1982). The Government is not in the state to take that burden, the higher officials firmly objected. But MGR did not heed to their advices and the programme is put into effect, the rest is history.

16,93,576 children belonging to age group of 2 to 4 years are nourished by Nutritious meal programme and it is funded by the Governments Social Welfare Department. The remaining groups, Government of Tamil Nadu’s Educational Department funded 35,99,198 children from the age group of 5 to 9 years and 97,212 children belonging to the age group of 10 to 14 years. Not only this programme increased the strength of school going children but also 76,000 unemployed youths, destitute ladies and widows were given jobs.

Chief Minister MGR checking the quality of the food which has to be served to the children

Before implementing MGR asked the help of the people through the media like Radio and Television. On 30.6.1982 by 7 pm his speech was broadcasted on Radio and by 8.15 pm in Television. I vaguely remember his speech, those days we did not had TV and I saw this broadcast in my relatives house.

On the inauguration day that is 1st July 1982, MGR went to a School in Pappakuruchi village which is situated in Thiruverumbur taluk, Thiruchirapalli district.

Second phase of implementation of Nutritious programme in towns 15.9.1982

The opposition party, DMK pelted with words that MGR is making the people of Tamil Nadu as beggars and some of his party members tried their level best to molest the immaculate project by spreading rumours and raising doubts about the quality of the food etc. To counter, MGR created a high level committee to monitor the operation. The committee did the duty, the challenges was successfully encountered by MGR.

Even after his death the programme endured, when his rival came to power he continued by giving an egg as a supplement. The free child nutritious meal programme is named after MGR and called as Puratchi Thalaivar MGR Nutritious Meal Programme.
