Adimai Penn 2017 - II

Sri MGR Year 100, 18th July, Tuesday

On the 100th year of our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR's birth centenary, many of his movies were digitised and released. Recently Emgeeyar Pictures movie Adimai Penn was digitised and released on 14.7.2017 all over Tamil Nadu. The response was awesome as the picture is sharper and looks new.

I watched many of the video clippings posted by MGR fans in social media and I was mesmerized on seeing our MGR on screen. How handsome and charming he is. Can't believe that he was 52 years old at that time. Above video clipping is by MGR devotee Sathya captured during the Sunday evening show.

MGR In Malaysia 1970 - II

Sri MGR Year 100, 3rd July, Monday

Our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR visited Malaysia in 1970 after shooting some scenes in Expo 70 Japan. I have been very fortunate to have access to some of the rare images of MGR visiting Malaysia during the shooting of Ulagam Sutrum Valiban. I like to say that one of my friend Sree Sitharan have shared his treasure with us in 2013 and which was uploaded as 100th post in srimgr.com blog in the year 2013.

Recently my another friend from Malaysia Govindaraj Arumugam had sent me two images relating to MGR visit in 1970. Images from the Malaysian magazine is given below.

Science Fiction Movie

Sri MGR Year 100, 29th June, Thursday

Science fiction genre is seldom used in Tamil movies and we all know that our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR had acted in one sci-fi movie "Kalai Arasi" which was released in 1963. Nowadays frequently aired though the movie is more than 50 years but still has the entertainment value.

Below is the review written for "Kalai Arasi" movie in Indian Express newspaper in April 1963.

Film stories revolving round "doubles" have been quite numerous on the screen. Sarodi pictures "Kalai Arasi" adds one more to that category of pictures.

A social-cum-fantasy, the film is now running to crowded houses at Plaza, Murugan, Mekala and Jayaraj in the city.

The physical resemblance between two women and the complications it creates are treated here more as an off-shoot of the story than being its main plank.

The central character in the story is a young woman (P.Bhanumathi) who is kidnapped by a man from outer space, and is whisked off to a planet in a flying saucer. There she teaches music to the daughter of a space-king and propagates the cultural heritage of South India to the inhabitants in the planet.

Meanwhile, the father of the girl continues his search for her and through his ward meets another insane girl, looking exactly like his own daughter.

Mohan (M.G.Ramachandran) the college-mate of the zamindar's daughter, takes upon himself to find the girl and after over-powering one of the spacemen, air dashes to the planet in the flying saucer. He finds her and works his way to come down to the earth. How the young man overcomes all his obstacles in the planet and how the identity of the two girls is established, form the climax of the film, which is studded with a plethora of synthetic thrills, stunts and chases.

M.N.Nambiar, P.S.Veerappa, N.S.Narayana Pillai, Rajashree, Kumari Saraswathi, G.Shakuntala, S.R.Janaki, C.T.Rajakantham, Kamala and Mohana are the other members of the cast.

Directed by A.Kasilingam, the film has all the ingredients that make a successful box office production.

The film is exceptionally good in outdoor and trick photography, for which credit goes to the cinematographer J.G.Vijayam. Music by K.V.Mahadevan is good.

Shanthi Kalaivanan

Sri MGR Year 100, 20th June, Tuesday

It is disheartening for us when Mr.Kalaivanan called me and informed that his wife Shanthi Kalaivanan, the person behind the construction of MGR temple in Nathamedu, breathed her last today morning. Couple of days back one of MGR devotee Venkat told in spite of her illness she regularly performed early morning pooja to our thalaivar in the temple and also she is the person who decorated MGR's mother idol.

We srimgr.com team prays for her soul to rest in peace.

Digital Delight

Sri MGR Year 100, 18th June, Sunday

Many old movies are being digitized and re-released frequently. Couple of years back we observed many of our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR starrer movies such as Nadodi Mannan, Adimai Penn and Ulagam Sutrum Valiban were digitized and released over South India. Recently Rickshawkaran was re-released in digital and DTS format.

Nowadays

Sri MGR Year 100, 8th June, Thursday

Presently, I had an opportunity to watch one program in Vijay TV it is spoof of our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR's scintillating action movie Ayirathil Oruvan, and one of the judges is Baghyaraj.

The centre stage has a ship and in the background a large screen showing some dazzling backgrounds. As a fan I was not satisfied on the portrayal of Manimaran on screen by a boy. One instance, after Manimaran consenting to be a pirate, the boy while leaving the scene calls his comrades as "adimaigale"! (slaves) what? ridiculous isn't it. The whole concept of Manimaran character falls. But considering the age and how well he should known the background of our Thalaivar, we can pardon. The boy tried to imitate the post 1967 tone of MGR, he tried his best in showing MGR antics of Marthandan character from Nadodi Mannan.

Apart from such mistakes we have to appreciate him for his performance and we have to take into consideration that his parents who are born a couple of decades after that movie, the remarkable image, the embodiment of MGR which imbibed in his young mind. Moreover they have already spoofed many movies and their heros which were all a pure mockery, this one stands apart. As one of the judge mentioned that representing MGR who is God to many is a very dangerous one.

As part of MGR's centenary celebration MGR starrer 7 movies are re-released in Coimbatore this week the image is given above. The news is shared by MGR Devotee Yukesh Babu.

A Close Encounter With God

Sri MGR Year 100, 30th May, Tuesday

I have heard many accounts about people meeting MGR, and aftermath. What most of them said on the instant of seeing him is this.

1.     When he/she sees MGR they raise their hands as a gesture of welcoming him.
2.     They forget all their problems, and also they forget where they are.
3.     Some kind of force field works on them, which makes them to move closer to MGR.
4.     The eagerness to touch him arises.
5.     Their happiest moment in their life.

All the above facts resemble something Godly. Most of them reading this blog could say that all the fans or followers in the world will behave like that. But what about others? Who are not his fans and who dislike MGR? What happen when they meet? As a rule the above listed should not happen right? No, you are wrong the above thing happened to them also.

From my experience I came to know what all they say about MGR is true. Even who disliked him say that MGR is like this and that and when their eyes falls on MGR they turn and behave like his followers and when MGR disappears from their view they become normal and start to say that he is like this and that again.

My experience happened when I was 11 years old, 17th May 1984, Thursday the time is 7.30 p.m. unforgettable day for me the day I saw MGR in person. First of all I want to mention that I was not a fan of MGR, like others of same age, I was a fan of Kamalhassan.

Tamil Nadu was having by-election for 4 constituencies, Anna Nagar, Uppilapuram, Mayiladuthurai and Thanjavur (DMK partys fort). ADMK contested in Anna Nagar, Uppilapuram and Mayiladuthurai and the Thanjavur was given to its ally Indira Congress. The election date was 20th May 1984 and results on 21st. MGR was then the Chief Minister, as part of the by-election he was expected to tour the Anna Nagar constituency on 17th May by 4 pm.

The announcement came two days before that MGR will pass through Arumbakkam via Poonamallee High Road now Periyar EVR High Road by 4 p.m. It is summer holidays and like others I was also looking forward to see him. My home is located near the High Road and we have let out some part of the house to a Clinic and a Barber shop. The owners of both shops are staunch DMK party supporters. Time is running on, it is now 7 pm, a 3 long hours of staring the road made me frustrated and lost interest in MGR and started to read a comic book on Phantom.

Slowly and slowly the crowd was increasing on both sides of the road. Now and then I popped my head out to see him. By 7.20 p.m. there was a roar (this sound is much more in decibels when compared to MGR appearing on screen) and I came out to see what's happening, the white van took a right turn and went to a Lane and disappeared. Some of the people left that he won't come back again. But most of them said that MGR never takes a prescribed route, he always changes the plan and that he was very conscious about the surroundings.

By this time two people was holding a very sick guy, entered the clinic he was wearing a shawl, trembling and had much difficulty to get on the stairs. As he was looking very sick he was allowed immediately to see the Doctor, while other patients wait.

By 7.30 p.m. the White Van was coming again on the High Road a small light is fixed on the top with loudspeaker on one side, the top of the Van had an opening so that MGR's half of the body can be seen clearly. First and final I had a glimpse of MGR, he was donned in White Shirt, Fur Cap and Dark Black Glass, his skin tone is Red, no Rose, no kind of Gold, no all combined and shining, I became ecstatic, I was showing a victory sign and jumping, MGR looked at me and smiled, when he passed me, then I looked around and all people had the same feeling. The sick man now has mingled with the crowd and he was shouting, long live MGR. And the Doctor who often ridicules MGR's rule was waving to MGR with a syringe in his left hand. Some of the crowd was trying to stop the van to have more glimpse of him.

The sight of MGR makes a chemical change and people, they act like an energized electron. This is a true incident and I witnessed it.

I have heard lot of stories where one gets a close encounter with MGR. In villages people who have touched MGR will not wash their hands for some days! And there are stories after the function attended by MGR the left over in the Soda bottle used by him was regarded as a venerable thing. The left over soda was mixed with water and distributed to all! The bottle gets a new life. And there is another legendary story that during an election MGR went to a village. The farms they possessed turned a very low harvesting that year, and when MGR came he was asked to walk on the farm believing when his feet touch the soil would bring them a good harvest. That became true the next year they had golden harvest. These things make me feel that MGR is a demi God for the people of Tamil Nadu.

N.B.: Of the four constituencies three was won by ADMK and allies and one Anna Nagar constituency was won by DMK.

Doppelganger

Sri MGR Year 100, 10th May, Wednesday

Your interaction is needed for this post.

Some of us might have heard myths about MGR's doppelganger, used during 1970s. My father had a friend who is one of MGR employees, often visits my home and I disliked his demeanor.

Later my father used to tell me about MGR's adventures in politics and he once said about MGR using a lookalike to outwit his adversaries. Unfortunately I was around 9 years old and I did not took much interest to know more about MGR, and now my father and his friend are no more.

Below is one image which is not photoshopped or tampered, what is your opinion after viewing this image?

Same image with full detail along with MGR ? is K.P.Ramakrishnan the photo is shared in our blog by his son R.Govindaraj.

Labour Day

Sri MGR Year 100, 1st May, Monday

On this Labour day I received some MGR images showing importance of hard work, which are already posted in our MGR blog. One image piqued my interest.

I don't know the person who done this fabulous art work. Your work is very much appreciated.

A Flexible and Deadly Blade

Sri MGR Year 100, 21st April, Friday

The urumi or curling blade in English is a type of weapon used in martial arts and its origin is from South India. This weapon is known in Tamil as ‘surul vaal’, as its name suggests, this weapon consists of a metal blade that is wielded like a whip. The surul vaal has often been described as one of the more bizarre martial arts weapon that entire world has seen. It is an extremely dangerous weapon, not only for those whom it is used against, but equally so for its wielder. Thus, this weapon is one that is exceptionally difficult to master.

This urumi or surul vaal was used by our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR for the climax action scene in "Rickshawkaran". After, MGR breaks away from the chains he draws the deadliest weapon from his belt which is the correct way of placing the surul vaal.

MGR had used two different length weapons to perform this fight scene. One weapon length that MGR uses is nearly 4 feet long with four blades. The action scene lost roughly for two minutes.

There is no knuckle guard only thumb guard is present for protection of the wielder, MGR has took lot of risk. We all know that Puratchi Thalaivar is well versed in various martial arts this surul vaal technique is taught in final level in Kalaripayattu. Because it is a difficult weapon to use.

Click the image to enlarge, as I have posted the above images to comprehend how much lengthy weapon MGR uses. While performing this art in the table, MGR uses lengthier one which is roughly 9 feet.

This fight scene is more than enough for us but MGR while swinging the weapon over his shoulders in arcs, performs yet another breathtaking jump over oil barrel. MGR the master in martial arts and master entertainer.

Muthaiyan

Sri MGR Year 100, 13th April, Thursday

MGR fan members in Facebook and Mayyam will know who is Muthaiyan. He is one of the MGR fans who had a special talent in uploading Puratchi Thalaivar MGR images from his movies. He had a knack of exhibiting MGR in various themes, as he had experience in audio-visual his images stands apart from other MGR fans.

It is disheartening to me when I came to know that Muthaiyan from Salem is no more. He passed away on 11th April, 2017. We have lost one hard working guy who carried MGR legacy to the media. We srimgr.com team prays for his soul to rest in peace and our heartfelt condolences to the grieving family.

Muthaiyan once gave me title cards of most of MGR movies, I took all the colour movie title cards and uploaded in our MGR blog a couple of years back. The images he posted from the video will give a doubt from which movie MGR had given such a pose and a specialist in still images taken during action scenes without jerks. His works include collection of MGR's titles shown in the title card such as Makkal Thilagam, Puratchi Nadigar, Ponmanachemmal and Puratchi Thalaivar from every movie MGR acted, types of glasses he used, MGR in various disguises, uploading MGR smile images, collage of MGR images etc. He used to post in alphabetical order and he used to work late hours, you can still see his posting in mayyam which are uploaded during 2 and 3 am. I want to say about his humour, he posted his bike and named it as "Kadhal Vaganam" remembering one of Thalaivar movie. He is against using water mark in MGR images and he also not wanted to use his name in his shared images.

His work which I used in our MGR blog

Below are some of his works: (Thousands of images he had uploaded in facebook)

School

Sri MGR Year 100, 2nd April, Sunday

Not only MGR fans, most of the world knows that MGR is the first person who always comes forward to provide a helping hand whenever the situation arises. We know many instances to quote. Most of his help are gone unnoticed. One such incident came to our notice couple of weeks back.

Click the above image

Recently Daily Thanthi paper published one article, that a school building was demolished in Uthukottai and the old students of the school shed tears. Article further states that the people visited MGR in 1954 for donation to construct new classrooms. MGR assured that he will conduct drama in Uthukottai and the collection can be used to construct new classrooms.
"What people hoped is a small donation but instead MGR has given more than what they expected".
As promised MGR came to Uthukottai in 1955 and staged two dramas and generously gifted his collection. By 1956, 6 new classrooms were constructed and they named it after MGR.

Now the building which is more than 60 years old and in dilapidated condition, the concerned authority demolished it and the old students remembered their memories with tinge of sadness to the Newspaper.

Second Week

Sri MGR Year 100, 12th March, Sunday

Old theatres in and around Chennai are the heaven for the distributors for re-releasing old movies and particularly Puratchi Thalaivar MGR movies. And one such theatre is Mahalakshmi. Couple of years back theatre management converted old system of showing movies into DTS and Qube format. And from then on Mahalakshmi theatre was showing new movies.

"Ayirathil Oruvan"  Second Week Poster

I have to get past the theatre daily for my work and I use to see that every week a new movie been released in this theatre. And to my knowledge I have not seen that movie for a second week run. Last week Divya Films have released "Ayirathil Oruvan" as 3 shows on the eve of Jayalalithaa's birthday. And the Sunday evening show was houseful! Lots of images and videos were uploaded and shared by MGR fans in social media.

Due to the huge response from the fans, "Ayirathil Oruvan" movie is now screened for the second week. It is unprecedented for a Di, DTS movie release in Mahalakshmi to see a second week run. Mr.Chockalingam of Divya Films have forwarded the second week poster to share in our MGR blog.

Tamil Captain Blood

Sri MGR Year 100, 4th March, Saturday

Rafael Sabatini's novel "Captain Blood", in my opinion the best on screen version, our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR starrer, digitised motion picture with colour corrected and one of Divya Films proud production "Ayirathil Oruvan" is released in Mahalakshmi theatre this week on the eve of Jayalalithaa's birthday celebration.

Above are the ad images given in print media and as well as in Facebook. We thank Mr.Chockalingam of Divya Films on releasing the cult classic movie.

The Hindu

Sri MGR Year 100, 22nd February, Wednesday

The Hindu Tamil daily continuously wrote about our Puratchi Thalaivar MGR for the centenary celebration. They shared the authoritative and rare information which were already published in many books and magazines.

Later they published it as a book titled "MGR 100 Kaalathai Vendra Kaviya Thalaivar". Above is the cover of that book with a mesmerizing MGR image done by A.P.Sridhar.

"The Hindu Tamil's tribute to M.G.Ramachandran, MGR 100, has sold more than 5,000 copies in less than a month of its launch on January 26. The Hindu Tamil ran a 100 day series titled MGR 100 on the eve of his centenary focussing on the many attributes of the actor-politician who founded the AIADMK.

This series that recalled his colourful legacy in an interesting way received an overwhelming response from the readers. The successful series was then compiled into a book, which again was a huge hit among readers.

A second print order of 5,000 copies of the book had also been placed, and have had a great response. The Hindu now plans to go for a third print of the book, which is priced at Rs.200".

Above article is reproduced from the newspaper.

What Happened In January 1967?

Sri MGR Year 100, 11th February, Sunday

This post was scheduled to be published on 12.1.2017 on the 50th year. Due to unavoidable circumstances it was delayed. Many of us know the historical significance of this day, the incident and the aftermath became a catalyst for our beloved Leader's mentor party to attain the status of ruling party of Tamil Nadu.

To the right is the poster showing MGR with neck cast, asking people to vote for "Rising Sun" (the election symbol of DMK)

Rare photo of MGR in Government General Hospital

January 12th 1967, afternoon, after attending the election campaign, MGR came back to his house for the lunch. On that fateful day, one of his villain actors, M.R.Radha accompanying with Vasu (producer of Petral than pillaiya?) visited Ramavaram garden to talk about the new project. While conversing with Vasu, MGR heard a bang on his left ear. He saw M.R.Radha pointing the gun, blood was oozing out, MGR tried to stop the blood flow and felt dizzy, he staggered and reached his car and motioned his driver to take him to hospital.

And what happened next? how MGR dealt with the incident? how MGR felt about the results of the general election? all these are given below by his personal bodyguard K.P.Ramakrishnan. He was with our beloved leader MGR when he was convalescing in Government General Hospital.

Vadavannur

Sri MGR Year 100, 26th January, Thursday

One of my friend Methil Rajan have posted images of Vadavannur house constructed by our MGR. I requested him to send me all the images for re-posting in our MGR blog. He kindly did. From his own words.

It is located at the place called Vadavanur which is 24 KM from Palakkaad city. It is on the route of Palakkad-Kollengode.

The image to the right shows the Malayalam sign board mentions "Kerala Sarkar Samugiya Nithi Vagupu Samyojitha Sisu Vihasana Sevana Pathathi" in English it is Integrated Child Development Services of Kerala Government

On Thalaivar's 100th birthday morning 8-30, I went to that place and found the outside small gate is locked and the neighbours told me that it is now Anganvaadi run by Vadavanur Panchayath and it will be opened by 9-30 am.  So I waited there for an hour.  One lady teacher Ms.Rajini came and opened at about 9-30 am. She started cleaning the premises.

Left image shows poorly maintained backside of the house

She said the legal heirs of this property left it and no one is there to look after this house. So Vadavanur Panchayath took over this small old house and made it as Anganvaadi.  There were some items like old furniture's which were kept in a room under lock and custody of Vadavanur panchaayath and the rest of the place is used for Anganvaadi.

The right image is the Well showing the stone carving 'Sathyavilasam' done by MGR

It is in a pathetic condition, low maintenance. They are only doing cleaning work and if require some minor repair work.  One small photo of our thalaivar is there in that hall. And back side of the house there is a big well in that Sathyavilasam is written in Malayalam.

That teacher told me to see the well and asked me to cautious going there because lot of snakes are there since it is not maintained properly".

Ente Vadavannur:

The people of Vadavannur have celebrated our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR's 100th birth day in grand manner. The Malayalam daily "Mathrubhumi" have published the news about the function.

MGR's mural painting on the wall of AMMUP School, Vadavannur was opened on 17.1.2017 and they have proposed an idea for construction of MGR memorial museum.
